Who We Are

The Central High School Alumni Association was founded in April 1958 by the members of Central Alumni. The Alumni Association is a 501c nonprofit organization with the purpose of providing college scholarships to descendants of Nashville Central High School graduates, honoring the former faculty and perpetuating the camaraderie of graduates of Nashville Central High School.

Founded in 1917 as the first public high school in the county system, Central High School stood from 1921 -1971. One of the earliest student government associations in the South began here.  Many graduates became city and county political leaders.   The last mayor of the old Nashville City Government, Ben West, and the first Metro Government mayor, Beverly Briley, were classmates here.

The last graduating class was 1971 after which the school, located in south Nashville on the hill above the State Fairgrounds on Raines Avenue between Wedgewood Avenue, and Southgate Avenue, was torn down and converted to a Public Television Station.

The Association is governed by a eleven member Executive Committee. The Executive Committee meets the second Tuesday of each month, at 11:00 am at the CHS Alumni Building (Old Central Band Building). Executive Committee meeting minutes are available upon request

Scholarship Committee selects the deserving young people receiving the benefit of the scholarships.

Each year in May all classes gather in Nashville for a reunion, fund raising and awarding scholarships.  In 2002, 2003, and 2004 we were able to give eight $3,000 scholarships to deserving young people selected by our Scholarship committee.  Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, the Association was able to  award TEN $3,000 scholarships in May 2005, and again in 2006.  Since that time the Association has awarded more than $782,300 to over 369 deserving high school graduates.

The Association encourages donations from all sources so that we may continue to provide scholarships to deserving and needy young people.  Of course your donations are tax deductible and will be greatly appreciated.

Remember, the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, let us help our future leaders be the best they can be.
